On Saturday 9th March 2024, The Blue Market in Bermondsey will be hosting a special event known as Wassail. This ancient tradition is a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of spring and to bless the apple and pear trees so that they bear fruit. The event is organised by Rouel Blue Garden Club and Trees for Bermondsey with the support of Blue Bermondsey BID.
At 4 pm will kick off with free crown and garland making at the market. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get creative and make their own crowns and garlands using a range of materials. You can sip on mulled cider or non-alcoholic fruit punch to keep yourself warm while you work.
As the day progresses, a special guest will arrive to join in the festivities and make the day even more memorable. From 6pm, there will be a lantern procession from the square to Rouel Orchard, where the Wassailing will take place. This is the perfect opportunity to get the whole family involved and have some fun.You can bring along something to wake up the spirits of the trees, such as a pot and wooden spoon, a drum, bells, or a horn.
The Blue Market is a charming location that’s perfect for a family day out. While the Wassail event is a particularly special occasion, it’s worth visiting the market on Saturdays. With its relaxed atmosphere, friendly traders, cafes and pubs, it’s a great place to visit.
